Sailor Moon (‘Let It Go’ Parody)

24 May

Sailor SkylerSo you have all seen them dress as Sailor Moon….twice(here and here).  And you have seen them sing ‘Let It Go’…..twice(here and here).  The next step seems pretty obvious.   Suuki wanted to sing a ‘Let It Go’ song all about Sailor Moon in honor of the Sailor Moon goodness that is happening.  So I sat down and wrote the lyrics for them and they practiced.   I made any repairs to the costume that needed doing since being worn for NY ComicCon, a Girl Scout Halloween Party, the school Halloween party and Trick-or-Treating.

We used a black plastic tablecloth for the backdrop with a moon taped to it.  We found the kitchen had good enough acoustics to record the song and then we were set.   Well, after 10 takes due to wardrobe issues (accidentally ripped off her bow), lyric oops (started singing ‘Let It Go’ at parts), and prop distractions (almost took the camera out with the wand).

This song is dedicated to a wonderful nurse that moved away.   Nurse Kate, you were amazing and I don’t think that any nurse will ever live up to the bar you set in the kids’ eyes. Where else are we going to find someone who loves the same things as all 3 of us?  From Doctor Who to FireflyMeowchis to Sailor Moon, and, most importantly, Cosplay Tips, you made every visit with you memorable.   We miss you terribly and hope you are having a wonderful time in your new state and job.

Frozen Party Theme

29 Apr

Did I mention being a bit behind? Also a bit out of order? Although I just posted my son’s birthday cake for this year, his sibling’s birthday was February 2nd but I haven’t shared their special cake….or should I say cakes.

Suuki really wanted to see the Broadway musical Matilda. Instead of a birthday party, they agreed to have two friends over to watch Frozen and have a mini-party.

Frozen 1The Frozen Cupcake

  • 1 box of ice-cream sandwiches
  • 1 Wilton White Sugar Sheets Edible Decorating Paper
  • 1 Wilton Blue Sparkling Sugars
  • 1 Wilton White Pearlized Sugar Pearl Sprinkles 5oz
  • 2 tubs of White Frosting

  1. Cut a ice-cream sandwich in half.Frozen cake
  2. Frost the top of one side and place the other side on top.  This will create a layer effect.
  3. frost the outside of the layered ice-cream sandwich.
  4. Place in the freezer.  Repeat until you have done all the ice-cream sandwiches this way.Frozen 2
  5. Freeze at least 1 hour before going to the next step.
  6. Frost the outside of each “frozen” cupcake once more.
  7. Sprinkle the top with Blue Sparkling Sugars and White Pearlized Sugar Pearl Sprinkles.
  8. Serve on light or aqua blue plates.

Frozen DrinkThe Frozen Float

  • 1 carton of vanilla ice-cream
  • 1 blue colored juice (Note:  If you wish to avoid “bad colors” you can color white grape or apple juice with natural blue dye from Color Garden or another natural food color.)

  1. Place 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream into a clear glass.  (I used plastic wine glasses.)
  2. Pour blue juice over the ice-cream.
  3. Serve on white plates with white spoons.

Now you are ready to pop some popcorn, slide Frozen into the Blu-Ray, and watch 3 8-year-olds sing through the entire movie.

The Family Cake

Frozen main cakeWe live in the same town with a lot of our family.  Both of my sisters live here with their families and my parents live here as well.  Family birthday cake time is a big production in our family.  Suuki has wanted 1 cake for the last year.  They saw this cake 2 weeks after their last birthday and never forgot it.  There is a bakery one town over called Carousel Cakes.  They sell a wonderful Blue Velvet Cake accented with silver pearls and sugar snowflake.  I used Wilton Blue Ready-To-Use Icing to write on the cake.

The Blue Velvet Cake is unique because it is vanilla.  My mom is allergic to chocolate so this is a nice change of pace from red velvet.   They also come in cupcake form.

Huge bonus:   They ship nationwide so you don’t need to live here to enjoy them.  Check their site out because they have amazing cakes of all kinds including a Pink Velvet Cake during the month of October with a $1 of the purchase going to breast cancer research.  Their Red Velvet Cake is apparently one of Oprah’s favorites that they renamed it:  Oprah Red Velvet Cake.

MatildaAs for Matilda and our Mom & Me Night in Times Square, Suuki had a blast. We browsed through a few stores before eating at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company which, sadly, I felt was WAY overrated.  Shrimp should not really be almost clear.  At the theatre, I experienced massive sticker shock when we bought 2 ordinary-sized candies, a water, and an apple juice which totaled $24.  The play itself was wonderful and amusing.  Suuki said they was fighting herself not to sing along with the kids.

Frozen Pipes – Part 2

30 Mar

I am still writing the next part of the ComicCon posts but today we took a break to go the county Youthfest. While there Suuki had a chance to perform “Let It Go” as part of their event karaoke presentation rather than a talent show like last time. While they was singing, people started popping up from all over the event to see who was singing. After they finished, a man approached us and identified himself as one of the main organizers. He asked if they would like to sing the National Anthem at next year’s event. They have been floating on a cloud ever since.

On related a note, I read an interesting article at The Mary Sue about how Frozen has become one of the top 10 grossing movies of all time by earning $1.072 Billion dollars. Becky Chambers asked in her article “Will we ever stop hearing covers of “Let It Go”?” Well, Becky, as long as 8 year old love to sing it everywhere they go. Not anytime soon. Hehe, it really was a good thing for us.

Pinewood Derby – The Tardis Car

3 Mar

This past weekend was my son’s final Pinewood Derby before crossing over to Boy Scouts.  For his final car, he wanted something spectacular.  He had me make him “stickers” at work to go on his car to make it look professional.  When I say “stickers”, I mean pieces of plastic with 3M backing engraved into the design pieces he wanted.

Revell makes official BSA wheels in more than just black that comes with the kit you receive from the Cub Scout.  He opted for the Blue but you could also buy red and yellow.  Seeing how his mom can craft but not really whittle wood, we also bought the Funny Car body.  The paints were on sale for 88¢ at A.C. Moore.  We used Folk Art Metallic Blue Sapphire and Folk Art Metallic Silver Anniversary.  He won a medal from Most Futuristic Car and earned the 3rd place trophy for his Den.

Of course, his sibling made their own car as well because threy felt it wasn’t fair that the Girl Scouts didn’t have a derby too.  They layered their paints.  the bottom 2 coats were Folk Art Pearl Aqua Moire and then it was topped with Folk Art Extreme Glitter  Aqua.  They glued seed beads that we had to make snowflakes.  The window was done using their brother’s paint.

Frozen Pipes – School Talent Show

19 Jan

Suuki was in her school talent show on Friday night. They sang “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen, not the Demi Lovato version but the Idina Menzel version. We were able to find a suitable costume on Etsy, the shoes came from Sears, the crown was from Five Below, the glove was from the Dollar Tree, and the necklace was from A.C. Moore.

Here is their full costume:
